Because Sonora Smart Dodd and her six siblings were raised by her Widower dad, this proud daughter felt that her father deserved to be recognized.
So, after learning about Mother’s day during a church sermon she spoke with the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and asked them to create a day of honor for all dads. Dodd asked that they use June 5th as the day of honor since it was her father’s birthday, but they decided on the 3rd Sunday in June.
The first Father’s Day was celebrated June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.
