14-year old Valentina Maureira got a personal visit from Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet after Valentina made a video in which she pleaded to be allowed to end her own life.
Valentina, who’s been suffering with cystic fibrosis, secretly recorded this heart-wrenching video with her smart phone, then uploaded it to youtube.
“I ask to speak urgently with the president, because I am tired of living with this disease…She can authorize an injection to put me to sleep forever,” she said.
Her video has gone viral and has created a huge debate over euthanasia in Chile, since it’s against the law.
Despite Valentina’s wishes the Chilean government will not comply with her request. Instead they offered to cover the cost of psychiatric treatment for her and her family.
Valentina’s father, Fredy Maureira, wants to respect her wishes, “It’s very tough, I don’t want to be going through this, but I have to respect my daughter’s decision. She wants to be at rest.”
