First Black woman makes history as Navel brigade commander

Meet Sydney Barber, the first black woman to become Brigade Commander.

Barber of Lake Forest, Illinois was selected from among 30 candidates, she is the 16th woman to hold the position. Although Barber will hold the position until May when she graduates, she aspires to other commissions within the Marin Corps.

According to wbaltv, “Barber has a message for little girls who hear her story: “Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do something and don’t tell yourself that you can’t do something. The dreams that scare you the most are the ones that are worth taking.”
