You know how Facebook has hundreds of emojis with descriptions about emotions? Well Catherine Weingarten believes one of those raises a red flag, the: “feeling fat” emoji.
In an interview for the daily dot, Weingarten explained that fat is not a feeling and she believes it should be removed from the list. So she created a petition at change.org.
“It can trivialize people’s experiences, or encourage people to put out body-negative ideas and have other people validate that…“Fatness isn’t a feeling, it’s something on the outside; it’s an insult. A feeling should be something more internal.” Weingarten said.
Endangered Bodies (a body-positive nonprofit organization that works to empower women and end stereotypes about women’s bodies), has partnered with Weingarten and they’ve created the hashtag #FatIsNotAfeeling campaign.
To Facebook’s credit, they’ve talked with Endangered Bodies about why “fat” is problematic, but it’s uncertain if the emoji should be changed.
The petition at change.org has over 16,000 signatures, they would like to recieve 25,000.
What do you think? Should they change the emoji? If you believe they should, then #FatIsNotAFeeling
