Woman refuses to give up dogs for public housing has to live in car

When Hillary Burrows was told she had to make a choice between a house and her dogs, there was no choice: the dogs are her family, and you don’t abandon your family.

Burrows, an English teacher, had been working across Europe for the last 8 years before returning to Kent, England. She ran out of cash when she wasn’t able to find work.  When Burrows applied for public housing she was given  the choice to have a roof over her head, but she had to give up the dogs. Burrows refused and has been living in her car for the last 4 months.

Burrows told the dailymail, “I have never been on benefits in my life before, I have a degree I have diplomas. I am in a no-win situation – I don’t want people to feel sorry for me, I just want someone to give me a hand-up.”

When Hillary Barrows found herself homeless, she applied for emergency housing from the council, only to be told that she could have a house, but would have to part with her pet dogs, Robbie and Cleo, in order to get it.
