Mom claims school fat-shamed 6-year-old daughter

According to Florida’s WPTV, Laura Cacdac was very unhappy when her daughter Charley came home with a note from school notifying her that her 6-year-old was overweight.

A form letter from the school nurse indicated that her daughter’s body mass index was high and categorized her as unhealthy.

“It is suggested that your child’s health be examined by a physician, particularly as it relates to the problem suggested by the screening. A problem such as this that goes uncorrected or untreated can severely affect both the health and academic performance of your child,” the letter read.

Charley’s mom was especially upset not only with the impersonal nature of the letter, but also that Charley was able to read it herself.

This letter made Charley ask her mom a question that no 6-year-old should be asking: “do they think I’m fat?”

“My child’s favorite foods are avocados, broccoli and apples…she is perfectly healthy in every way: emotionally, physically, and academically,” Cacdac says.

Her trips to the doctor have indicated the first grader is healthy and not overweight.

Cacdac worries these screening and letters sent home with students could create body image issues.

She has now opted Charley out of future health screenings.
